student car insurance

does anyone know of any insurance companies that deal for students only?i've not been driving for that long and i need to keep my car on the road, but i'm paying £1300 at the minute and so a large proportion of my loan is paying for my car, aswell as my rent and so i always seem to be way into my overdraft so this term i'm left with about £60 to live on i'm desperate to try and find some cheaper car insurance! i've only got a little car with a little engine and i'm no boy racer, my little car couldn't cope with it, i just don't want to be labelled for it

Get a part time job in an insurance call centre, 25% discount with the company I work for , Although I'm an old student at 26 with full no claims, it has got my insurance down to £279 for comp cover, and I also get to earn £7 an hour which beats working in bar or shop.

Go for just third party cover only if you've got an old car worth less than £1000 and just buy a decent steering lock/disklok to stop it getting stolen.

It's best to check as many insurance companies as you can rather than 'student only'. Endsleigh are supposed to be student orientated and they are a rip off. Try Martin's articles and also https://www.elephant.co.uk are v.cheap for me.

Also try adding a parent or two as an additional driver, this can sometimes bring the quote down.
  • Hi don't forget https://www.confused.com as it searches nearly 30 insurers for you. It gives you a great starting point. I ended up with Norwich Union Direct on a special rate for young drivers - I too am a student with a small car and found no special 'student deals' (in fact Endsleigh seemed a rip off for student house insurance too).

It's a bonus accelerator deal where you pay for 9 months and end up with a year's no claims straight after. Saving 3 months and giving you a big discount for the next year!

The only drawback I can see with it is that you have a large excess to pay around £350 if you do have a dong. But as you say you're a careful driver I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem. Good luck!

do your passplus course which costs about £125 (6 hours of driving lessons). As far as i'm aware 4-5 of the larger insurance companies then treat you as driver with one year no claims. Therefore your saving outweighs the cost of your course by far.

    https://www.passplus.org.uk (sorry, originally i put .co.uk).

Unlike others, I actually found Endsleigh to be very reasonable. They were the first insurance company I went with when I was in my first year of uni, however I was driving around a battered old mini that was a older than me and had a tiny engine. Still got clocked speeding in it. LOL! Ahem! Anyway! At that point, I had already had my licence for about 2 years (although had not been driving in that time) and didn't have passplus.

I actually did a search on confused.com last month and funnily enough Endsleigh have come out on top for cheapest insurers for me even though I'm not a student at the moment. Saving me about £250-£300 pa on my current insurers!

Your best bet is to check out confused.com.

    hope this helps...

Your best bet is to just look around, when i first started driving i was paying about £600 for insurance and that was with direct line, which are still really cheap for me. Also depends a lot on where you live tho, from my experience different companies vary so much for everyone so just try them all! You should be able to get something cheaper than £1300 you'd imagine!
