Potential bank scam

Just got a very odd phonecall from a withheld number this morning, with the girl claiming to be from 'my bank'.
When I asked, she did know which bank it was (lloydsTSB), and the type of account I had, and that I had recently received money in from the FSCS (from Icesave) - and suggested that I wasn't making the most of it since my account only pays interest on the first £x.
Not sure if this is a sales pitch from Lloyds or a dodgy phishing type phone call scam. She didn't ask for any details confirming who I was, or anything else which they could use, so totally confused as to the point. Possibly just gave up when it seemed clear I was on the ball - told her I had already arranged an ISA elsewhere.
Anybody else had this call, and can anyone confirm if it's all above board?

Sounds like it might be legit since she knew about your FSCS receipt. Even so, you are quite right to be wary of any incoming call such as this. I'm glad she didn't ask for, and you didn't provide, any security / identity check information.

I had a call apparently from Alliance & Leicester once referring to my account with them which sounded ok, but then she said "just to make sure I'm dealing with the right person, can you please confirm your date of birth and your mother's maiden name". I politely pointed out to her that she had called me, it was an unsolicited call and she could be nothing to do with A&L, and I do not give out any security information under those circumstances, and then I terminated the call. You can't be too careful.

When I have had similar calls from my bank, they way they've done it is they will give me some confirming data about me or my account, then they will ask me to provide something similar.

As an example they will give me my DOB, then they will ask me for my post code.
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

I had exactly the same a couple of months ago and did exactly the same as you. I expect she was from Alliance and Leicester but you can't be too careful these days.

Your date of birth is nothing to with your account ! It is biographical data that can be found in numerous places. Your post code can be seen on any mail directed to you from anyone who knows where you live. These details are easily discoverable and should not be used as a basis for secure communications.

I got a call from someone, who was obviously ringing from deep within India, asking questions about our Barclaycard.
They said that they were looking into a possible fraudulent transaction.
Then they proceeded to ask questions about our account.

I never discuss anything financial with people who phone me. I always tell them that I will ring the relevant department of the financial institution concerned.

I rang Barclaycard (tel.no. on back of card) to find out if there was a problem. Turned out that the caller was genuine but you never know do you.

I'd bought something from Wickes that morning and the card reader, for some reason, wouldn't scan it. So had to sign instead.
Daft thing was, it was under £15.00.

I had a phone call from my bank almost immediately after my Icesave refund was deposited there. Immediately the caller said "This is XXX bank", I asked them about ten different questions about my account, balance, sort code, account number and told them I wouldn't be continuing the conversation until every question had been answered correctly. The caller seemed a little surprised that I put them through the "nth degree" but the call was legitimate and was just trying to get me to put my Icesave money into a savings account paying a measely 0.5% or something similar.

  • Un addressed e-mail from Halifax came in last week. My check card (as spelt in the e-mail) had been abused. Use the blue "sign in" link to correct matters.
I have no Halifax accounts, no check card so didn't use the link. Passed the e-mail to Halifax, who saw it as a new scam!

im with lloyds and when large amounts of money go into your account you do tend to get letters/phonecalls from them trying to tie you up with their savings accounts and what not.

I think I had a similar one yesterday afternoon. I dismissed as busy on a witheld number as I was in a meeting, but when I picked up the voicemail, it said it was so-and-so from "the bank", not XXX bank, YYY branch and didn't say what it was about but just to phone them back

I figured it was not quite right - even if it was legit, I reckoned they would just be trying to sell me something I didn't need!
