Claiming on my home insurance for items stolen on holiday

Can someone give me some guidance on home insurance?

I have recently come back off holiday where I had a camcorder & digital camera stolen from suitcase whilst in Palma airport (we were delayed for an hour and this was the only time my cases were unsupervised).

When I returned to Birmingham airport I noticed the case had been opened and realised the items had been taken and reported to the relevant people and obtained the documents needed to claim on my holiday insurance but my holiday insurance company have refused to settle the claim because they class the items as valuables and state they should have been in my possession at all times.

My question is can I claim for these items on my home insurance? I have been told that I could possibly but i'm not so sure.

Depends on your policy -I've no idea if you have personal belongings cover - you need to ring your insurance provider.

If you have an extension for possessions you take away from home you may be able to claim (though there may be similar conditions regarding how you have to look after items).

Check your paperwork to see if you took the extension, and if so make a claim and see what happens.

When you say the cases were unsupervised what do you mean?

    Were the suitacases locked?
were they in a locked vehicle?
or were you unable to supervise them because they were checked in?

In some circumstances a lack of supervision and locking will be considered negligent and the insurer won't pay out.

I am personally with your travel insurance company on this.
I would put valuable items (jewelry, cameras etc.) in my hand luggage and keep it with me all the time.
Insurance is not a back up for a lack of care.
I'm not being harsh, but I'm just conveying that is exactly the view of the insurers abd they won't pay out if they don't think you've taken reasonable care.

Of course if you suitcases are out of your hands then there is nothing you can do, but I'd expect them to be locked.
