DVD Region Setting

Options
Somehow (and I don't know how) the region setting on my PC got changed to Region 1. I changed it back to Region 2 and noticed that there were 3 changes left.

However, I have had some problems with my PC in the last few days, so I restored it to an earlier date. This didn't solve the problem, so I undid the restore.

I have now noticed that there is only one Region change left! Has the restore and undo done this? Do I need to worry if I can't change my DVD Region and it gets stuck at Region 2 - or worse at another Region?

  • Hia,

I suspect that the restore and the subsequent undo has set the region and then set it back again. However, all is not lost, there are numerous (free) programs around which will allow you to watch dvds from any region.

    - Try DVD Genie

(Assuming you are watching dvds on your PC)

    Hope to help,

    Losername

Good advice, Losername, but DVD Genie only works for DVD drives that don't have RPC2. I don't suppose anyone would know of an alternative to DVD Region-Free (recommended on the DVD Genie page), which costs $34.99?

    Cheers!

    HP DVD Writer 300n.

    Firmware flash
  • Thanks Irnbru. The warnings on the weblink are scary. I'm not very technical with PC's. Is it safe to flash the drive and if I go ahead, can I always Restore it if things go wrong?

YOu won't be able to restore if you screw it up, and you may render the drive useless!

It's writing the to memory of the DVD drive rather than the hard disk on the PC, so no it can't be restored :)

However, I would go ahead personally, it's not hard, just make sure you read over everything, and know what your doing. And make sure you don't lose power during the flashing process!

I use a sharware program called DVD Region Free, as I didn't want to flash the firmware on my company laptop, works a treat with all the DVD Players I have used.

    http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm

It has gone up though about $40 :-(

I firmwared my DVD drive with no problems.

Also use DVD genie to reset the Windows and WinDVD Region Changes.

DVD Regions are a pain. Especially when no one seems to care that you can patch/update/remote control code nearly every DVD device, you think "Why bother with region encoding in the first place?"

Would anyone know if there's a region-free firmware flash for the Pioneer DVR-110? (There are some other models with very similar model numbers, but mine is definately the DVR-110).

    Many thanks in advance!!!
