cvs scanning

I posted - a thread a while back about my pregnancy issue- ie it was a shock etc -plus my situation
Well i had got my head round things - and yes have really begun to look forward to the new bundle of joy ( i have 3 kids already - youngest is 11)
Went to the hospital for my scan - i was supposed to be 13 weeks 6 daysy. Instead i was 14 weeks and 1 day - The sonographer said baby was perfect . She asked me if i wanted to do the blood test -for downs - but she was very casual - ie u dont have to if u dont want to - and many women dont bother.
I thought i am here anyway may as well . I was told i would get a call in 2 days if something was wrong - after that i would receive a confirmation letter in about 2 weeks. I waited anxsiouly for three days to pass - just to be on the safe side . Wow all is ok . But then the following Monday i got the dreaded call. The midwife who called was understanding - she booked me to go to St Georges hospital - yesterday . All day at work i was in and out of the loo. When i got there i had a very nervy wait. The lady took me into a room and explained - everything to me - and explained that 1 in 160 is still quite a big - but the cut off is 250
When i went in the room to see the doctor - he was so lovely. i told him not to show me the needle. He was very chatty - and reasurring and also said i didnt need to do it. They do not use local because they said they muscle that the go into - wont numb. They cleaned my stomach . i panicked - tears rolled down my face- through fright. The doc had his had accross me and was telling me to hold onto his arm tightly. Then there was a !!!!!- a strange feeling - he kept talking - and told me to look at the screen. He then told me to cough and he pulled the needle out . He showed me the baby again .
The scaning took about 15 mins the cvs took about 3 mins. I hate needles and pain - But i can tell anyone it was ok. My doctor was wonderful - and trust me i was petrified. He also told me the sex of the baby - i now have to wait a few days for the results. But i thought i would let anyone whos scared of having a cvs - dont worry

I remember your post when you found out your were pregnant.
Why don't you come and join us on the pregnancy thread. It is a great place to be.
A few of the women have gone through the test you have just had also.
I had the testing myself but did not have to have the cvs test as my results were okay. I know I agreed to the test, but I would have struggled to go through the cvs as you (and others) have been so strong to do.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you as to the results
take care0 -

Last year I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant with number 6 - a total shock and after a gap of 10 yrs. Due to my age (43) I was very worried something might be wrong. I paid to have a private nuchal tube scan as my hospital doesn't do them. This was fine and hearing the heartbeat was amazing - she even told us at 12 weeks it was a girl. We were thrilled - however when the blood test came back it showed a 1:15 chance of having Downs. I had expected it to be high but not that high. The genetic nurse at hospital said not to give up on the baby and booked me in for a CVS a few days later in Manchester.
The weekend was awful and I was terrified going there, the proceedure was painful and I could have done with some gas and air, I think this was because I was so tense and nervous more than anything else.
I went home and rested and the days waiting for the results dragged by and I had some very low moments. The results came back showing everything was fine and that we were having a girl. Frannie arrived 9 days late in May and is an absolute joy, who has completed our family. I hope everything turns out well for you too. ((Big Hug)) because I know what you are going through.0 -
Hi Diva
I've had a nuchal scan previously but not had the experience of CVS testing so thanks for posting yours - I hope goes well for you x
I too remember your post when you first discovered you were pg and I'm glad you've sorted everything and are looking forward to the latest edition to your family x0 -
Keeping everything crossed for you OP.
I found out in January this year that the baby I was carrying had Down's Syndrome - we'd had a 1:70 risk back from bloods, so had an amnio to confirm. Sadly, we lost him at 18 weeks.
I'm pregnant again (24 weeks today!!) and have had another amnio; everything is OK. But, I remember feeling much the same as you when I went for the test this time....I completely fell apart and became quite distressed.
It's an awful wait, isn't it, especially when they've come back and told you the screening tests are OK. To be told that actually they're not throws you completely.
I haven't ever had a CVS, but I have heard that they can turn the results around quite quickly - much faster than an amnio - so you'll hopefully know very soon.
I'd also like to say to anyone choosing to have amnio or CVS that it is all over very quickly - yes, it can be sore, but the procedure itself always sounds worse than it turns out to be. I would have had a CVS this time, but my GP referred me to the wrong department (!!) and by the time my midwife booked me and sorted things out I was far enough along to wait for an amnio.
Good luck OP, I hope everything works out well.

Just to say I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Just wanted to add my experience to anyone waiting for tests/results....
I had an amnio 8 years ago - no offer of anything else at my hospital back in those days.
Test wasn't done until 20 weeks gone and then on the day baby was in wrong position so "come back next week" - all I could think of was 21 weeks plus 3 weeks to get tests back took me to 24 weeks and in theory a baby can survive at that delivery time - just more stress to cope with as well as the worry.
Any way to cut a long story short (it didn't hurt - slightly uncomfortable) - but found a private clinic in London who could do testing from sample taken during my amnio done in local hospital (north of england).
Simply asked for extra 5ml of fluid to be taken - hospital provided container and packaging - and I posted off special delivery with cheque for £95 later that day.
3 days later I phoned for results and they confirmed that Downs (plus a couple of other problem/ syndromes were not present). Still had to wait for full results from NHS results but the Downs test was important to me as I was an "old" mum! (Feel even older now.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: )
good luck to all considering / waiting on test at moment.Declutter challenge 2023.

Glad you found the staff so supportinve - fingers crossed for you.
Would say, as you found them so supportive that you let them know (eg email to the PALS team) when it's all done & dusted (encourage them to keep it up). They probably deal with 9/10 patients as they did you, but the majority of the feedback they get will be about the 1/10."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0
