HD video codec

Trying to watch some footage shot in full HD on my laptop, media player fails and tells me that it doesn't have the correct codecs to decode the video. It's encoded as an MPEG, if that helps. I need to find a codec for it. Any ideas?
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

This might do the trick (it's free): click here.

We don't really know how the file was encoded. Installing this MPEG4 Codec won't do any harm, but it might do the trick and allow the file to be played in Windows Media Player.
If not, use MediaInfo or GSpot to find the necessary codec without having to install a pack or another media player.0 -
You could download and install Xvid codec also DivX as some HD is encoded with DivX which now supports full HD the Pro bundle is trialware but the player and the codec are free. Check the file properties as it may give you a clue as to what codec was used to encode it.0
