Babies And Cold Weather

As it was a lovely, but freezing, day today decided to take little one for a walk. All set, snowsuit, back carrier - but no mittens! Hubby said we could drive to Mothercare on the way and get her some. I didn't see the point in driving to go for a walk when we have perfectly good countryside on our doorstep. So had to improvise with a pair of her thick terry socks -did the job brilliantly and will suffice until I can scout around the charity shops for a mittens pattern.

I have had a gap of ten years between last two children and I'm amazed at the things I had forgotten -like putting lip salve around little noses and mouths to stop them getting chapped in this weather.

Also, how brilliant tights are - mine wears them under dresses, jeans, trackies etc.. They are not just for girls either. When I was a younger mum living in the north of Scotland - it was a tip a mum gave to me to keep little ones warm. Her sons wore tights under their trousers to keep them toasty - they were navy not girly pink!

my LO was away to the woods with the nursery it was funny as they get these waterproof suits to put on over the top of their clothes and they were all like starfish as they were all so well wrapped up!! she had to go with odd gloves as i couldnt find matching pair lol and i agree with the tights my DS is 10 months and im forever picking up or looking for the socks he has thrown away, with tights i know he is warm and i am happy!

hope you had a nice walk!

LOL, my two pre-term (35 weeks and 33 weeks) babies both wore socks as mits as their wrists were too tiny and fingers too long! So much better than mits. Why do they make mits so wide anyway??? Twas the nurses in SCBU who started the trend, all the babies in there wear plain white socks as scratch mits. The scratch mits fall off and they refuse to tape them on.

And my eldest wore tights (he was born in September) under his trousers, then he could wear a jacket and no snow suit.

Personally I hate seeing babies over wrapped, some parents go mad with a sleepsuit, then cardi, a jacket, a snowsuit and then a huge thick blanket ontop when in a pram. Yes, I know it's cold but come on!!! They should be toasty not sweaty! :rotfl:

Its amazing what you can use if you put your practical mind to it. Makes you wonder why you spend all the money on the latest must haves when every day common sense can be so much better. :)

  • I wish my 13 month old would tolerate mittens or a hat. He screams until they are removed

Lots of free patterns here for knitting including mittens, and here for free sewing patterns.

    Good luck.
  • I'm not a parent...yet but I work in a Pre-School...
It really bugs me when I see parents walking in town with big coats, hats, scarves and gloves on, pushing their child along who only has a coat on!

Their poor fingers and noses are bright red and shiny, I feel like saying something to the parents but my fiance always drags me away! Its so frustrating! Even a blanket would help!!
