advice on coming off depo injection

  • thanks for all your help now i can be prepared if i experience problems. my next injection is due 8th jan so i think il book appointment with doc before then and ask about cerezette. the reason i was on depo is because there is a family history of blood clots so the ordinary combined pill was no good it carries a risk of blood clotting apparently ? so if cerezette is progesterone only it should be ok. i read about the risk of osteoporosis with depo and it worried me which is why i asked about calcium supliments however my nurse has never suggested anything else just keeps giving me injection every 12 weeks. if i hadnt had the abnormal smear i would of come off it in the summer but didnt want to risk getting pregnant until everything was ok.considering im now 34 i dont want to wait too long.

Hi I was on depo for just under 4 years and my doc refused to let me stay on any longer, so i came off it and went onto cerezette. For two - three months i had spotting all month and then i came off the cerezette as i had got married and wanted to start trying. I bled for over 4 weeks solid and it drained me completely.

I also had an abnormal smear while on the injection, but got the all clear at the next smear.

I have now had regular periods for the last 5 months and despite trying, i think we may need to try harder! :)
Good luck with it all :)

I was on depo for over ten years, and after I came off it it took a year for my periods to get into some kind of regularity although they were never regular before.

I didn;t TTC immediately, but when I did start this year (about two years after coming off depo) I got PG instantly.

it took me 18 months to become pg with 12 months before periods restarted. seemed like forever! I had the jab for 3 yrs and conceived at 27.

I thought you could only have it for 2 years? My periods came back pretty much straight away but the cycle length did vary wildly between 20 days and 34 days.

I was on depo for 4 years - it made me really depressed when I went on it, and again when I came off it (I'd never have it again, but it was wonderful not to have painful periods for so long - had none at all for the whole time I was on it!)

I had reasonably regular periods before depo, then got them back just 6 weeks after I should have had the jab when I stopped. I had regular periods every 6 weeks for a while, then had very short cycles until the doc gave me Norethisterone one month.

Am now regular at around 26 days, and trying to conceive. My periods are lighter, and less painful now, than they were before the depo.

the results of the last smear really worried me and i was quite stressed out for a while i had the 6mnth recall one last friday so im waiting for the results.
i hope its ok because my biological clock isnt just ticking its ringing a constant alarm lol  . iv been lurking around the TTC thread but couldnt really post on there. i recognise a few of the names on here from there so good luck too you all. iv bought some multi vit with minerals today because they contain calcium and folic acid but i think i should get some iron tablets aswell because a few of you have said about heavy bleeding making you feel run down. and maybe a big supply of chocolate incase i start feeling depressed :D
