DIY roof terrace - any advice?

Options
Want to demolish part of gable roof to expose attic floor and make roof deck/terrace. Can I seal existing boards, or do I need to refloor for exterior surface? If so, what do I use? Any advice appreciated. Oh yes, AND CHEAPLY please! Thanks.

    Hi ampersand,

You will probably get more replies on the In My Home board where there are lots of DIY experts, so I'll move your thread over there shortly.

Do you propose to knock down part of the gable wall, and roof?
And just deck the cieling joist, and seal with what my i ask?
Or have i read your post incorrectly?

Thanks for your reply plumb1 - this is a French house with big beams and an uneven floor. My aim is to remove the gable wall(this is a simple 'tent' apex-the floor completes the triangle, if you like) remove 4-5 metres of roof to form the new exterior deck from this floor. The floor timbers are chestnut and oak. I hope it is feasible to seal these in some way to give a weatherproof external,walk-upon surface. Or, should I be looking at another form of overlay, perhaps roof-felt or re-decking entirely?
Any ideas you have would be welcome.
