Council Tax Query..........

I'm a full time student and until this week my 18 and 19 year olds were both students. My daughter has decided to leave college which leaves a bit of a financial problem. I know I have to let Tax credits know but will still receive these and CB for my 10 year old. My query is with CT
1) Will the bill be revised to 75% of the original bill pro rata for the rest of the year? Just checking as it seems a lot for one 18 year old to pay.
2) Am I, as the householder, responsible for paying this? (obviously my daughter will have to pay this to me as I'm not liable myself)
3) Will I be able to claim CT benefit on this 75% even though I'm not liable or will my daughter be able to claim CT benefit?
Would be grateful for any clarification from anyone, Thanks!

Have a look at the Citizens Advice website - Adviceguide which has a lot of detail about council tax liability.chugalug wrote:I'm a full time student and until this week my 18 and 19 year olds were both students. As I understand it, you are the one that is liable for Council Tax as the owner/tenant of the property (if you have a partner then you are both liable).
What income have you got? If you are on Income Support and a lone parent you can claim Council Tax Benefit for any that becomes liable. Depending on what your daughter who left/is leaving college does next, you might be entitled to 2nd adult rebate.
The quickest way to find out exactly where you stand is to phone Citizens Advice or your local council.Torgwen..........

AFAIK,
The council tax bill will be in your name, it won't be your daughters responsibility to pay it as she will not be hold the liability, she will instead be classed as a non-dependent.
This means that the amount of council tax/housing benefit you receive will reduced by an amount depending on her working circumstances/income. This reduction is the amount that she deemed to be able to afford to pay you to contribute towards household costs.
As a student you should be able to claim the 25% dicount on the bill , then you will be assessed fro council tax on the remaining 75%. You will then get the benefit minus the non dependenat deductionI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
i thought if you were a full time student you didn't have to pay council tax.
as im not at work i cant check this out but id certainly ask your council about it.There's someone in my head, but it's not me0 -
you are exempt if all residents over 18 are students - not just the person who's liable to pay the bill

Looks like you may need to give your local council tax section a ring and ask them as it appears that youv'e hit a complicated bit of the rulesI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals.
