I've been through this too, and had cholecystitis as a result which was the most pain I've been in since giving birth, so I do sympathise!
The consultant suggested I had my gall bladder removed - I said, no thanks (because you carry on producing gallstones in your liver once your gall bladder is removed) and what did he think of my trying something else before resorting to surgery? To my surprise, he said go for it - if it works then great, it's better than surgery. I did the gall stone flush as stated earlier (the one with olive oil and lemon juice) although I would suggest leaving out the Epsom salts as they taste absolutely DISGUSTING (made me want to be sick) and my husband has done it without and it still works fine. I got rid of my two large gallstones and lots of "gravel" and I had no further problems! If you want further recommendations on this method, by the way, just google "gallstones" and "olive oil flush" and see the literally thousands of people who'll agree what a fantastic method this is. And it's cheap, so very OS! Look at it this way - you'll have one uncomfortable night; you may be sick - you'll certainly be rushing to the loo - but you won't do yourself any harm and you'll probably do yourself no end of good.

Four years on, I do find that recently if I eat loads of cheese at any one time then I do get the odd murmur - not painful, but uncomfortable - so it may be time to do another flush. In the meantime, the herbalist I originally consulted prescribed tincture of hydrangea root (which I keep in a large bottle in cupboard) - one tablespoon diluted in water to be drunk whenever you feel any discomfort - and that deals with the odd excess. You can get this from The Herbal Apothecary.

And - on a less medical note - if you don't want to do this at all, then all you have to do is look at labels on food. Anything with less than 12% fat (ie 12 grams of fat per 100g) shouldn't upset your gall bladder.

    Best of luck!

i have just come out of hospital for the 6th time in a year and have been told i have gallstones and my gallbladder is deteriotating ... i went to a different hospital this time and they diagnosed and scanned me the next day .. my local hospital kept given me morphone patting me on the head and saying ua re fine now go home!!!

i have been advised by my consultant to eat low fat, horror as i have been on atkins for 3yrs and btw atkins doesnt cause gallstones u are predisposed to getting them or not, as someone already said the 4 F's and another one is losing a lot of weight which i have done (hence atkins gets the bad press)

my problem is i can barely eat anything let alone low fat and am losing weight week after week but better that than the agonising pains

was nice to hear about people having had the op and feeling completely ok now.. for those still waiting like me lets hope they can fit us in soon

  • From what I have heard high fiber foods like cucumbers, tomatoes, grapes, cold water fish, avocados, apples, green peas, and lemons are good for the gall bladder

    Hello All,
i am a total novice at this !! but have just registered to say how interesting i have found this thread.
Having suffered for years with an upset stomach, and food intolerances, only to ever be told it's just irritable bowel, having had cameras stuck where they shouldn't be stuck, and been through every tablet and potion available !! I decided that it was just my place in life to always have an upset stomach and a sick feeling !!
I have now been diagnosed with gallstones.
My Dr sent me for a scan 2 weeks ago because i have been suffering with severe chest pain , always in the evening, and very irregular, with no obvious triggors.
The scan revealed that i had alot of stones too many to count, and i was told that surgery would be the next step.
Tis is bizarre but i was actually pleased !! for years i've been fussy with my food, avoided going out for meals with family and friends. Panicked about leaving home if there wasn't a toilet within easy reach. I actually would only leave home with "my own safety pack " a packet of mints, ginger biscuits, fresh water, bowl , hot water bottle, toilet roll , rescue remedies.
On the whole i never used them but always felt safer with them packed in the car.
My Dr has now told me that all my tummy troubles are more than likely part of the gallstone problem. Until i started getting the chest pains nobody had considered Gallstones.
Anyway i am off to hospital on the 19th March 2009 to see a consultant, and then will have to wait for my operation. In the mean time i'm trying to go down the low fat route, and eat little and often.
Just for the record, i am 41, fair, female, but at 5 foot 9 i weigh under 10 stone {have never been above a size 12 all my life } so definately not fat, oh and i have a family !!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • gallstones - horrible horrible pain!! I got pancreatitis from mine too, which was even worse! - As for diet, just go low fat - look for less than 5% fat, you can even get really low fat cheese now, and less than 5% crisps, rice cakes, japanese rice crackers etc are great for when you want a snacky thing!!!

I found I could eat out fine so long as I made sure they were clear about what I wanted, and that it was for a medical reason - no butter on my veg or spuds and lean meat or fish, also indian resteraunts are fine - tandoori chicken, boiled rice and salad!!
