hi how much are you allowed to make before you start paying tax

Depends on each person. Its your tax code on your payslips *100

Personal Allowances all listed here at HMRC: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm
For a standard UK individual it's £6035 for this tax year(08-09) and £6475 for the next (09-10), but there a many differing rates, see the link above.0 -
