How to transfer large amount out of Post Office Card Account

My elderly father has allowed the balance of his Post Office Card Account to build up to quite a substantial sum as his state pension plus other benefits and allowances are paid into it but his outgoings are small. The money isn't any benefit to him just lying there and I'd like to move it where he will get some sort of return, although that isn't the issue here. What I need to know is how do we withdraw a large amount from the account (we are talking a few thousand pounds) as obviously we cannot do so in cash - can the Post Office issue a cheque or a bank transfer of some kind?

Suggest that enquiries are made at his Post Office, the account description says:

You can only collect payments over the counter at a Post Office™ branch.

Thanks. Yes I was afraid of that. I'll make enquiries at his branch of the PO as obviously I don't want him withdrawing thousands of pounds in cash! I just made this thread in case someone had perhaps been in a similar position before.

Assuming there isn't an easier solution you could always help him open an instant saver account with the post office (3.75% - there are worse accounts!)

And then there won't be any need for the cash to come his side of the screen as you can ask for it to be paid straight into that instead. If you find a better account (non post office) then he will be able to transfer it to another account in the normal way.
