How do you define a keyworker?

Options
I am looking at paid employment through my local St John Ambulance division to work with London Ambulance Service tomorrow. I will be registered as bank staff with SJA.

Does this qualify me as a keyworker as the contract is with LAS?

The only reason I ask is that keyworkers get a big hand from the government onto the housing ladder. It may sound like a shifty way of doing it, but it's so hard for someone like myself to get onto the ladder at present I'm keeping my eyes open for every opportunity. Obviously this doesn't affect my employment either way!

Dont think you are, only NHS staff are classed as key workers.

  • We are all key workers.

Parliament is currently considering how to keep the High Street presence of those that sell us meat and veg and do not work for Tesco.

Should the relevant committee recommend subsidised accommodation?

Not true. Who is defined as a keyworker depends what scheme you are looking at.

The scheme the OP is referring to (I think) is the one which gives keyworkers some money towards purchase of a house. I know that this is wider than the NHS as a teacher friend got real money out of it.

There are other schemes for priority housing for keyworkers, which are normally administered by the local authority. In some of these schemes the administering authority has quite a lot of leeway to define who the keyworkers are. For example, in a London borough I was associated with until quite recently, the voluntary sector campaigned successfully to have a percentage of keyworker housing designated for workers in the vol sector - this seems fair enough, as govt. services are frequently provided by the sector! :xmassmile

tim-n, you need to do some serious Googling on keyworker schemes. I would think that your eligibility as a bank staff worker depends on SJA's definition of a BSW - are you on the regular payroll and can be sent wherever you are needed? If so, common sense says you are a keyworker. If you are a BSW who is just offered work on an 'as and when' basis and can then accept and reject it, common sense tells me you probably aren't!

Sorry should have phrased that better, I meant that NHS staff are included in key worker schemes, as well as alot of other people, but it is very limited.
