A friend of mine has just found out that her card has been cloned. She had used a cash machine in leicester and has had £450 removed from her bank account. Does anyone know who is liable for this money. Has she lost this money or can she claim it back from the bank.

At the moment the banks take full responsibility for card fraud unless there is any suggestion that your friend in some way compromised her pin number.
If this was a case of the card being cloned via one of the 'fake' attachments on the front of an ATM then the bank will already be aware of the problem as all the transactions will be recorded by the bank and they will be able to see which cards were affected and should already be contacting her.
If she hasn't already been contacted she needs to contact her bank immediately and have the card 'stopped' otherwise the fraudster can continue using the cloned card and the banks do have rules about time limits on notifying them of a problem.
I had a cloned card last Christmas, brand new Tesco CC only used in Tesco 3 times. Got a phone call from Tesco on Christmas Eve asking me if i had tried to purchase £1200 of computer equipment online, which I hadn't. The card had never left my possesion nor had I even disposed of any credit card slips. Tesco services said my card must have been cloned, which I always found terribly suspicious as it was a brand new card and only ever used in Tesco..was unhappy about their security after that and gave up the card. In that instance though they only had my card number they didn't have my pin.
