r we visable online

This may be a silly question, however I will ask anyway. I am trying to distance myself from a friend, and we always talked via e-mail. Would they know when I am online or using my computer. This person is very computer literate.

No, if you are using e-mail, then your friend won't know whether you are online and using your PC. There was a thread earlier today about "bouncing mail" back to the sender, so you could just make it look like you had changed your email address, without actually changing your email address. I'll see if I can find the thread.

I don't think that the poster wants to talk to this person! so why would they want to use instant messaging?

    More haste less speed!

If your on broadband with a static IP, headers in your email may have disclosed that IP address. Depending on the security you have, someone may be able to ascertain if your computer is online.

If you both happen to use AOL then it may be possible for the other person to tell when youre online
  • One measure you can take is to websurf via a proxy such as this.
