iphone new sim problem

I recently bought an iphone g3 from ebay and put my normal 2g sim in it untill I got a 3g sim , and it was working fine but I have just got my 3g sim and registered it through itunes and it updated the software but when I came back to it it had finished but said the sim was not compatable (not sure of the exact wording but that is what it meant) then the phone has gone to emrgency only mode , changing sim does nothing the phone was unlocked before if that makes any difference. What do I do now ? I know very little about these so please make it simple.

You've basically bricked the handset. When it's unlocked and you do a software update it !!!!!!s up the phone and means it's unusuable

    lufcgirl isn't quite correct.

When you update the phone, it reverses the unlocking that was done. You need to unlock the phone again.
Good news is that you can do this yourself, downloading some software. Seen this, not tried it so it comes with the usual warnings:

meh!.... i think the first 2 replies to this both contain quite dodgy information....

firstly.... exactly which iphone did you buy... an iphone g3 isn't a model that they produce (yes, i'm being pinickity)

    iphone 4gb
    iphone 8gb
    iphone 16gb
    iphone 3g 8gb
    iphone 3g 16gb

are the models that are around at the moment..

now.. if you have one of the latter 2, and bought it off ebay, these are normally unlocked versions from a country that have to sell an unlocked version, for example italy..

now.. if it is a original one (silver aluminium back, not full plastic) then there is a possibility that the dev team have created a "hack" that can help you

finally.. there is no need, at all to pay for any unlock... at all...

Cheers Marky you obviously know your stuff , I bought a 3g 8gb foolishly I updated it (I know know better) I suspect it is a non uk version as it didnt have the power adaptor with it , it has the aluminium back with the black plastic bit at the bottom, can non uk be used for web surfing? and what do I need to do now???

That's the previous model, not the 3G. The good news it can be jailbroken and unlocked to use SIMs other than those from o2.

The bad news is you may have paid 3G price for the older model.

I notice now that it is 2g the box says 3g obviously it is to make it look like a 3g my fault possibly for not checking up on things , it cost me £125 so its not out of the way price wise , once it got locked out I tried to sync it and restore it to previous setting which it wont do , so can it still be unlocked as it is still thinking it needs to be restored ? can I unlock it myself? if so how? I am so gutted I wish I would have left it now
