Has anyone seen a standalone Mpeg4 Recorder with a Hard Drive built in ?
The compression ratio should be at least 5/1 making it much easier to store and backup recorded programmes

No. It'd need to be a pretty powerful system to be able to encode the divx/xvid in real time. My AMD64 3500+ is close to realtime to give an idea. I'm assuming you mean like a Sky+ box, or PVR where you can record and do playback.

If just recording then you don't need something as powerful as you don't need it done in realtime.

Yes. I mean exactly like a Sky+ box or PVR.

There shouldnt be too much of a problem doing it in real time when it is done in hardware and you arent too worried about the filesize/quality compromise (as one pass is obviously the only way that can be done in realtime and the compression can't be optimised)

I can't understand why these recorders arent available outside of China.

Because of the filesize an 80 gig hard drive would probably store as much as a 400gig Mpeg2 machine and moving files to a pc would be far easier too

You can get mpeg4 cameras that do it in real time, so I am sure you can get a hardware based player sometime in the future. From what I have seen the camera's encode it slightly differently to DiVX/XViD, although you can convert it to DiVX/XViD later via software.

Quality isnt too bad although I seen better with XViD compressing my own video with AutoGK.

I do record my own stuff on a pvr mpeg2 data stream and convert it later to XViD although this isnt what you wanted.
