XBox 360 Elite

I've bought my kids an XBox 360 Elite for my kids for Christmas. I really want them to get the most out of it. Can anyone point me in the direction of how I would go about that. Either a quick rundown here or a web link to an idiot's guide. I'm really interested in why there's such a large hard drive, what kind of media you can download, XBox live, etc. I connected their Wii to the internet wirelessly. Can you do the same with the XBox?

Yes you can do wireless but you need one of these, you can get the wireless adapter and a 12 month sub for £70, heres a link,
you would also need 2 of these if your kids wont share an account that is
you can download full lengths but these cost ms points which are these
as to the size of the hard drive its only 120GB but with the new update you can install the games onto the hard drive which takes about 5GB but you will still need the disc in the tray to play the game, all it does is loads the game quicker,
oh and have you got 2 controllers if they want tomplay against each other, some games will only let 1 gamertag on 1 console to play on LIVE at any 1 time but there are games where a guest player is allowed, i think halo 3 was 1 of them but you would have double check
  • Thanks for the info. It's all gettin' a bit more expensive! One question, do you need to join XBox live to download the updates or is there a connection available without it? I like the idea of being able to store the games on the HDD as they are forever scratching their discs.

i posted a link to the xbox 360 adapter but you dont need to use this if the 360 is in the same room as say the router. Theres 2 levels of xbox LIVE membership, theres silver and gold, silver will let you download game updates when needed, download demos or trailers and arcade games, or theres gold which you can anything you can do on silver but you can download demos a week before they are released to the silver members and play multiplayer games against other people over the world. When i said about storing the games on the hard drive the game disc will still need to be in the disc tray so im guessing if the disc were to be scratched the game wouldnt load even if it were stored on the hard drive. can you explain what you mean by this
"do you need to join XBox live to download the updates or is there a connection available without it"

    im confused,

With the Wii you can connect it to a modem straight out of the box. Without paying for anything you can update the software of the Wii, join Wii channels, etc. You mentioned that there was an update available for the Xbox which enabled the user to store games on the HDD. My question was do you need to join any Xbox Live service, or can you just buy the wireless connector/use an ethernet cable and connect it to a modem to download this update?

you need to be connected to a modem or router to get the new dashboard update, to get the update or any updates for games you can have either the silver membership or a gold membership,

if i have missed anything just let me know
  • When you connect up to the internet you get a silver account so you can download updates and get xbox live arcade games - demos are free and you can buy them with ms points. I think you get a months free gold trial too when you first sign up.

one thing not to do is put your credit card details on the account as once they are on the xbox you can't get them off again, use the points cards instead.
Nothing to see here, move along.

you can remove the card details, you just need to call xbox support and explain you would like to remove the card details, yes it would take about 30 days but they still get removed
