Is this illegal by Capital One?

Capital One (Mastercard) credit card

I have noticed on my last three credit card statements that no date is given by which I must send in my monthly payment. Capital One used to be very good at pointing out on the statement the dates by which payment (by different methods) should be sent so that the customer was in no doubt whatsoever about it. I thought it was a clever ploy by Capital One to confuse customers and cause them to send late payments and so be charged the £12 late payment fee. As they are such a huge company this must cause confusion to thousands if not hundreds of thousands of their customers. Now I am thinking that surely this must be illegal for them to do this. The only way to be 100% sure of the date by which payment must be received by them is to pick up the phone and ask them. Why should any customer have to do this?

  • my capitalone mastercard statement shows clearly twice when the min payment should reach the account by. Once on sheet 1 under the summary and again on sheet 2 in same place. It also says payment can take up to 5 days to clear and see the reverse for quicker methods of payment. This stands true for sept, oct and nov statements.
The old format where payment due date was listed down the left side of the statement was fazed out a while ago.

  • Thanks you for that information. I have checked again very carefully and I can see now that the date is there as you have said. The reason I didn't see the date is that the layout has been changed so that this information is no longer presented in the format that it used to be (with icons according to payment method and date underneath each icon) which had appeared on the left hand side of the page but the date is now just shown on the right hand side of the page in a shaded area. The dates had been shown in the previous place for the four years that I have been with Capital One. So please excuse my mistake. Don't you just hate people who waste your time like me. LOL

    Sorry everyone.

This made me laugh because I had the same problem with my MBNA statements until I realised I had to turn over the page because the due date was printed on the back :).

I also had a bit of a rant to my DH when it appeared that I owed some money on a catalogue statement that I was sure I had paid off. After a 10 minute rant or so I looked again and realised that I was actually in credit which, if I'd paid more attention to what I was doing, I'd have realised was exactly what I intended because I have some "buy now, pay later" items so I was deliberately trying to get into credit!! (No posts needed about how I should put that money into savings, yada, yada, yada - won't work for me right now.)
