New virgin wireless set up help please.

Evening, ive been sat for the past few hours trying to work this out and the past few days putting it off but now i need to sort it. We swapped back to virgin after having sky and the engineer brought out a modem rather than the wireless package which has now been sent out to me and i need to connect things together but they left me no book to do so and im a bit stumped. I have my sky broadband for the next 24 hours before it gets cut off so im on looking for any help i can get.

Our pc set up is main pc connected with a yellow cable (ethernet?) and daughter is wireless upstairs and main pc has wireless too but uptill now we didnt need to use as its next to the phone line anyway. Do i need to set the wireless router up for my daughter to get internet or would her wireless connection to main pc be enough? Or if it needs to go through the router how do i connect that? As what ive read online so far is to take the blue cable and the power cable out from the modem , connect the yellow cable to the modem and then to the router, my next instruction is to then run the virgin disc, does that tell me to power on the modem or does it stay unplugged I dont want to be stuck with no internet and no help if it doesnt work as phoning the virgin tech helpline from a bt line would probably be expensive. Virgin left me help books for the tv and phone but not how to set up the internet which is via cable rather than phone line, im still using my sky internet well as least for the next 24 hours.

Can anyone please help?

Manual for what should be your router. Install instructions are in there...somewhere, it's a long old manual. Post back if you still have any problems.

Google the make and model of the router then download and print the pdf manual.

Ordinarily the wireless feature of your wireless router will be enabled and ready to use after you've set up the router. The main thing to consider would be securing it with WEP or WPA. You'd then enter the same key you've set on the router (the password for WEP or WPA) on each computer which wants to connect to it.

If this doesn't work I'd suggest phoning the helpline and requesting the appropriate instructions to be posted. Also may be ask them to take off what it's cost you to phone them from your next will since it's their fault they didn't leave the appropriate manuals!

I installed Virgin wireless onto our existing Virgin system last week. The router came with a cd which guides you through the whole process in the usual easy-to-understand 'Virgin-speak', telling you exactly which wire to put where etc. I have since used the cd to add wireless to 2 other computers in the house, it really is v easy. If you have the same disc it will be simple - honest!!

do the other 2 computers connect wirelessly to the wirelesss router,

One is a laptop with built-in wireless, the other one is an old pc which I bought a usb wireless adapter for.

I now am using virgin wireless on main pc no bother but when im trying to connect my daughters pc, i ran the disc and all went well adding until the connection it fails, it finds the network but it cant connect and ive tried resetting the router and unpluggin it but still no joy and i really dont know where to look now except from here please. Both the pcs are dell vostros running vista and the signal strength is jumping from low to good no matter where i position it so i dont know if that has baring on it.

Can anyone please help?

you will need to make sure that you are trying to connect to the correct network. If there is someone near you who is alos running a wireless router you may be picking their network up and are trying to connect to that.
Do you have a unique SSID? which simply means your network name. if not then you may need to change it so it is unique.
Also when you have made sure that the network you are connecting to is the right one - check to see if there is a padlock symbol displayed next to it. If there is then the network has some sort of security running - amd you will have to enter some sort of password to enable access.

There may be other issues as well - but going to try and eliminate one thing at a time

There is an easier way

Forget wireless - its a pain and very easily hacked into (even when secured)

Try Ethernet over mains. It is faster, secure (new types with encryption only) and so easy - literally plug into router outlet and then connect others to any other pcs
