Windows 98

I have been offered some software for my computer which needs Windows 98 to run. Everything we have is either Vista XP or Millenium. Is it possible to buy something that will allow this software to work. I apologise if this is a really stooopid question I am technophobe

Thanks

  • why not try it? the software may be very old, and win98 was the latest version available at the time.

Thanks. That has been tried already by the person who has the software. There are problems when you try to run it without 98

XP and Vista have "compatability mode" that emulates earlier OS including 98

    How would I do that?

Right click on the program icon, the one you'd click to run it, doesn't matter if it's just a short for the program, select "Properties". Then click on the "Compatibility" tab, check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" box and then select Windows 98 from the dropdown box underneath.

To add to SJames' advice, you may also need to run the installer in compatibility mode. You do that by navigating to the installation file and doing what he said above.

Download Microsoft Virtual PC, install 98 on a virtual HDD and off you go.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Or VMware Server (don't worry it runs fine on XP) - http://www.vmware.com/products/server/ ;)
