Compaq (HP) Presario F500 Powers on for 1 second!

Hi guys,

Can you confirm my fears on this one? Got home tonight and my F500 powers on for about 1 second, then off again. Fans don't start up.

Took the HDD out and tried to boot it to see if it would go into BIOS - same result. Assume that the mobo's had it as nothing is spinning up (HDD didn't spin, fans wouldn't spin - just no life at all)

Have tried all the obvious Google result suggestions (hold the power button down for 90 seconds, etc) but no joy, so have cannibalised it ready to extract the data onto my HTPC instead. Irritating, though.

New HP mobo vs new laptop? Methinks a new laptop would be better...

I thought that at first; but it did the same on battery (fully charged) as on mains power and there was lights lit (battery charge light, power light) so there's power to it somehow...
Sorry - should emphasise that it's a laptop and not a standard desktop PC; similar faults on the net seem to point to mobo being dead.

Anyone any ideas on how much a new mobo would be, fitted? (any laptop repairers lurking on here?)

Reset CMOS / replace CMOS battery?

Try with mains jack plugged in but battery physically removed (in case of faulty battery?)

Done, and done! No sign of life. All vital organs checked, time of death, 17:04.

Out of warranty by three months as well, typical!

Have you an AMD processor in it?

If so, HP/Compaq have confirmed a number of models have known faults and have extended the warranty on some models. Give them a ring.

It does indeed. Ooh, thanks for that info (didn't realise). Think I'll give HP a call in the morning just to check.

However, it was a refurb model when bought (I'll learn my lesson), so I'm not sure if I'd benefit. Will try all the same!

thought i would add to this my presario f500 died last month phoned hp 09064770477 although mine was not on their list and it was one of the models with faulty motherboards so best to ring and check it was from currys so they know about this i was cross they d.idnt recall them
