I'm looking at going out to visit some relatives in this area sometime this year and wondered when it was best/cheapest to go? Ideally I'd like to go from a SW airport (Cardiff, Bristol etc)

DS1 lies in US and I think you will find that the price of flights - like all other holidays - gets more expensive from about April onwards. I don't really know much about how the pricing of flights goes because the only time I was on a plane was when we went over for his wedding - and I don't ever want to be on another one. :snow_laug
When I was booking our flights, it seemed to me that the earlier you booked the better. Something to do with a certain amount of cheap seats on each flight and they are all taken up quickly leaving the more expensive seats for later booking.
I know you can get last minute bargains for European flights and holidays, but I really have no idea if it works the same with trans Atlantic flights.

Cheapflights can give some indication of when's best to travel.
Looks like the usual suspects of Nov 1st-Dec 9th on Continental £231.
Seasons vary with airlines but stick to the usual format of:
Cheapest in Jan\Feb possibly March.
Dearer after Easter\April until about June.
Most expensive July\Aug\Sept\Mid end October
Cheapest Nov 1st -Dec 9th
Simply stupid 10th Dec -24th.
Possibly cheap Dec 25th-26th.
Of course this industry is driven by market forces so if an airline is having a shortfall of passengers then a short notice 'Sale' will spring up.
