If I could find a new stylus for my AR P77 cartridge (a decent one, not a cheapo copy) I'd still be playing my vinyls LP's .. still got 'em all from the first one I bought in 1969!!

I think there's a lot of truth in the fact that we could be seeing the end of major record labels. Bands make more money out of live shows than CD sales. What about all those major bands signing with Live Nation and the fact that artistes like Radiohead and Prince can give their music away for free (or for the price of a newspaper)!

Yes, but those who have funded the production, promotion and tour costs of a band to support their CD need paying back. They don't call them advances for nothing, and if people take the attitude that a band makes more off touring than album sales, so lets not buy the album, really means that with diminishing album sales and increasing touring costs, they then have to subsidise the repayment of the advance from touring revenue. Bearing in mind, the venue will always take a percentage of whatever merch the bands sell, and that touring in it's own right is vastly expensive.

The major labels aren't going anywhere. If anything, they're becoming more selective on what is going to maximise income rather than being blase about it in the past, which probably means a lot of musical talent is going to get overlooked and never have the opportunity they deserve.

Major bands can do what they want because they've reached a point in their career where they can comfortably live off the revenue they generate from previous deals and can do things like this, your smaller band couldn't dream of doing that.

I think the band has to be pretty damn big for that to be the case. It almost certainly applies to, say, U2, but almost certainly won't to acts that are a lot smaller.

The difference is I can hear a song, buy and download it easily and cheaply. To buy the CD would cost a lot more than to get the 1 song I want, and take longer to arrive as well.

Buying CDs make sense when you like lots of songs on an album, or enjoy listening to albums as opposed to individual tracks.
  • I still buy cd's, as I have done ever since they came out. These get ripped onto the pc asap, and are rarely played after that.
I listen to most of my music in the car, via mp3 disc in an mp3 multi changer. As my system in the car is a high end set up, I do have to admit that the original cd does sound better than the mp3 version (ripped @192).

On the downloading mp3's, I've done this a few times only from play.com with variable rates of success, but its not for me tbh.

    Cd is for me:cool:
