Forum groups - do they exists?

I've noticed in people's profile page that there's a section about group memberships, but I haven't come accross any groups on the forums. Am I missing something, or are there indeed no groups?

A forum group, is generally a few regular users who get together in a particular thread, as in any open forum, new membership of any group forum, is always welcome or invited, don't be shy to join into group discussions.

Some vBulletin forums use 'public groups' that normal users can join.

That may be users who have a common interest/cause, want to keep up to date with specific news etc..... Many different uses can be made of them.

MSE doesn't use/enable that feature of software in those ways, but the feature still exists. Hence the section on group memberships that seems to serve no obvious purpose.
