WEP key doesn't save - I need to keep re-entering it each time I switch on the laptop

Hi

I'd really appreciate your help. I have an ASUS laptop with it's own inbuilt WLAN card and a
DG834GT router .

It's getting really frustrating because every time I switch on my laptop, I have to re-enter the WEP key into the WLAN configuration.(I've got the WEP key saved on a word document and copy and paste it in).

I click 'save' and also 'apply settings' each time, and then the wireless works great. But then when I next switch the laptop on to use it, the WEP key reverts back to a different WEP key which is different to the one I have to keep re-entering (which correpsonds to my router).

Can anyone help me please.

Many thanks

  • Do you have any saved wireless connections? E.g. Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click the wireless connection and select Properties -> Wireless Networks -> anything in Preferred Networks at the bottom?

If there is do you need these? If not, remove all of them, reboot, and try again. It should save it this time.
  • Hi davidmt83 - thanks for your post, however I'm using the inbuilt ASUS WLan card, (not Windows) to configure the WLAN settings, so there were no wireless connections in there.

    Could you recommend anything else?

    Many thanks

So you're using ASUS proprietary software? Is there anything similar in this, maybe a saved connection box etc? Can we try deleting any saved wireless networks / keys from this too?

    let windows manage it

Agreed, if my suggestion above doesn't work then let the Windows do the leg work
  • As suggested I've now changed it so that Windows is managing the connection and just rebooted and the wireless works perfectly.

No need to manually input the WEP key any more now! Thank you - so pleased it's working as it should do now.

It's still on WEP rather than WPA, but at least there's some security attached to it, and the password for the router has been changed to something quite obscure which should help.

    Thanks again

If someone really want to hack it then do it no matter what type of security you have - it'd just take longer and more CPU power ;)

The aim of security like this isn't to make your own wireless LAN invincible - just to make it easier to break into someone else's connection.

For example, I have WPA, MAC address filtering and not broadcasting SSID. A nearby house has no security, SSID broadcasting ("Netgear") and I guess no MAC filtering. I feel safe enough.
