They are sometimes culpable when they deliberately fix a low Direct Debit to entice gullible customers, knowing that they will have a heavy debit balance at the end of the year. That of course is the result of paying bonuses to staff who persuade customers to change supplier.
Much of the time though it is customers who are not capable, or cannot be bothered, of understanding utilility bills; and in some cases the principle of the Direct Debit scheme.
It is evident from reading posts that some people believe that if a company fix the monthly payment at, say, £30 that is all they will ever be asked to pay and they simply do not appreciate that if they use £500 worth of gas/elect/water in a year they will owe £140. Hence if another company offer them a deal paying £25 a month, to them it is a simple saving of £60 a year.0
