present ideas for someone travelling round Europe

Hi

my sister and her friend are travelling around Europe in march next year.

They are doing it on a budget and have brought some sort of rail tickets which lets them travel round Europe i think they said and staying in youth hostels, cheap accomodation.

I would like to get them something useful for their trip as a christmas present but havent a clue as i have only gone on packaged holidays to spain or the UK

Any ideas would be gratefully received. :T

Have they already got a guide book? If not I can highly recommend Lonely Planet's "Europe on a Shoestring". In fact I bought it based on a recommendation by several other people! It's got everything from top sights and attractions to useful information and handy hints, and, as you may have gathered from its title, it's aimed at those travelling on a budget!

  • A good penknife - and maybe all in one cutlery set. A (plastic, UK?) mug, a headtorch, plug adaptors, a mini super absorbant towel... for some other ideas!

My most used thing when travelling is def a decent fold away knife... HTH!

What about buying her Youth Hostel membership? It's valid internationally and you can buy it online at https://www.YHA.org.uk

A nice notebook to use as a diary, memory cards for their cameras, money to have a nice meal and think of you when they are REALLY skint....

I would check with your sister if there is anything she needs before you buy.

I know it might spoil the surprise but they may already have brought some stuff.

Plus when we went travelling loads of nice and helpful people (parents and friends) got us stuff that we didn't need or didn't want, not in a horrible way, but if you are travelling light.

Sorry, just to add... when we went some of our friends booked for us to stay in a lush hotel in Singapore with a roof top swimming pool and all sorts.

Was a lovely treat because we were away for a year as a couple staying in dorms so was nice to have some private time and a cooked breakfast buffet the next day.
