As the title says really, how many hours is a full time college student 'allowed' to work in a week? My DS has told me that college have said that if he works all weekend that he would then be considered a part time student
I've never heard this before?

A full time student can work as much as they want as long as they still manage to do their course. Most universities/colleges say not to work more than 15/16 hours because more than that will start to affect your studying. But, really, it's up to you. I think anyway.0

Thank you this is what I thought. And it won't affect his studies because he never did any study at all all weekend in the past year when he didn't have the part time job  . So should make no difference to his results really.0 -
being a part time student is related to the number of hours on the course - nothing to do with how many other hours in the week are spent working (or sleeping or drinking or playing football or anything else for that matter.....!). i imagine the college would try to encourage students not to work too much, so that they do have time to work at home on their college work, but it sounds like a misunderstanding or misinformation.
it may impact on paying tax - if a student works all year round and crosses the taxable threshold then that's worth knowing about, but that's the only other thing i can think of that they might have been attempting to get at!:happyhear0 -
Most uni's/college's don't advise you work more than 16 hours a week in case it impacts on your study.
When I was at uni, in my final year I only had 6hours of lectures, all conveniently on same day, so I would work for 4 days a week, so was working approx 30hours a week. And I would spend then one whole day studying/doing essays and had one day of me-time!
Though I was living with a now ex-OH who worked so didn't have the temptations some students had to go out all the time!
But if you work more than 16 hours a week you will end up paying tax/NI.

you end up paying tax if your total yearly taxable income exceeds 6035 and you pay NI if your weekly income exceeds 105 per week0 -
you end up paying tax is your total yearly taxable income exceeds 6035 and you pay NI is your weekly income exceeds 105 per week
exactly - it's not the number of hours, it's the amount you earn (i'm sure a lot of people would be over the threshold in a couple of hours a week - not that i'm bitter)
