Hi all, were visiting canada in MAY2009. Am thinking of opening a nationwide acc. just for the trip but was told not many places in Canada will except Nationwide cards. SO may have to just use tarvels cheques, any advice would be greatfully received.thanks

the only card i used in canada (banff, calgaryand surrounding areas) last year and will do next year was my nationwide credit card and had no problems at all, not sure about the debit card, but as far as i am aware as long as its a visa or mastercard there shouldnt be a problemMFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0 -
I used a Nationwide Debit and Credit card (aswell as an Abbey Zero card) throughout Canada this Summer with no problems whatsoever, hardly used cash at all in fact...

I second what the other people have said, I've been twice and never had a problem using my Nationwide credit card, and my friend who came with me had no probs using her Nationwide debit card to pay for stuff.
Only issue that ever cropped up was that some of the ATM's (non bank ones - like the ones in the UK where you have to pay a fee to withdraw) would not accept Electron. But normal bank ones did.

I travelled across canada east to west this year and my nationwide (debit) card was accepted in restaurants, atms and in banks."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0

I go to Canada quite often as I have family there. I have never had a problem with the credit card. I have had problems with the ATM card. Some banks (I think Bank of Montreal) won't take the cash card, but then I have always found the 2nd place I try is fine, and there's lots of ATMs about, including at Supermarkets and drive throughs like in the US.
This was in Ottawa by the way (Ontario/Quebec border)0 -
Another thumbs-up for the Nationwide cards here. I used both the debit and credit cards in and around Toronto last November and the only problems I encountered were as previously mentioned - some non-bank ATM's wouldn't play ball. This space has been intentionally left blank0
