Hi all,
Went shopping to one of our local markets yesterday. we got there towards the end of the afternoon about 3.30pm.
We needed a joint for today (sunday) and found a lovely joint of beef skirt for £5.00 this will feed us today for our rost dinner and also tomorrow might do a stir fry with it.
Anyway onto the meat bargins we had.
As it was going to be getting dark in about harf an hour and evryone would was starting to go home. the bucher was selling his stuff off
we ended up with 4 big think pork chops for £3.00!!!!!
and 6 chicken 1/4s for £1.00 (yes thats right 6 for a £1):j
so that got me thinking about what others get offered
So i have started this thred so if you get a good bargin on some meat you can tell others.
Or if you see a super market advert with a good price on meat then you can use this thred to let others know.
And for thoes who have nevre had a bargin on meat and wonts to know how to get them.
Just go to your local bucher on the street or market towards the end of the day.saturdays are best thay offen reduce maeat or sell it by the bag full at a cheep price. Its all good stuff its judt what thay have left and will not be able to sell next week.
Happy bargin hunting everyone

Hi there! As this is a shopping rather than an Old Style thread, I'll move it to the Shop Don't Drop board

Halight, how much beef skirt did you get for £5.00. I asked my butcher the other week how much it was and was surprised by his reply, I always thought it was a cheaper cut of meat.0

I have often wondered about those meat vans at markets with somebody giving out a load of spiel to get people to buy: never had the courage to try any of it. Does anyone buy from that sort of van, and if so, what is the meat like? Presumably safe from food poisining?0

haven't touched those vans myself. I do know of a local butchers (slightly out of town) that does their own meat. Their mince and casserole beef is good value. Currently trying to empty the freezer so I can fit a load in. I keep filling up the gaps with discounted stuff from tescos and the like though.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

Hi,
Im not sure on the weight of the joint but its enought to do 4 large servings.
Will will be rosting it slow on a low heart today and have two large serviings off it. and we will use the rest tomorrow night in a stir fry. for two people again.
You are right theses cuts of meat are cheeper han others. if i were you i ould shop around got to a few buchers and get some prices of each.
Briskit is another good cheep cut. it dose ned to be cooked slowley or it get tough.
I hope this helps:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0 -

I think as long as thay look clean you are ok. cheak the meat afer you have brout it too give it a bit of a smell.
if you are not happy.... tell them...i bet you will even get a better deal doing this as thay would not wont anyone being loud out in the open about how thay are not happy.:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0 -

most is good meat , but much of it is imported , thats why its cheap , south american imports are fed mainly on gm soya and other gm crops , if that doesnt bother you it will be ok ,
I dont personally ,as a farmer ,buy any meat / dairy produce thats not european or nz ,
we are not allowed in feed medication or growth promoters , 95% of non euro meat is grown with in feed medication and or promoters and i dont want to eat that stuff , it can be dangerous if you fall ill and the antibiotics you are given dont work properly ,Its not detectible in imported meat because it should be withdrawn from feed 4 weeks before slaughter , but some still slips through the net ,
NO thanks , somethings are not worth saving a few £ ,
would sooner buy out of date / end of day uk meat anyday
ps , buy the brownest meat it will be more tender , not the bright red stuff , meat goes brown or darker with age , best meat should be at least 21 days old from slaughter , supermarkets only store for 10 days and is too fresh normally , If its red ,put in the fridge for a week or so , it will take a long long time to go bad .0 -
I buy quite often from the meat van at our local market and it's always been very good quality with no complaints. But I think we're lucky because the meat van is run by a reputable company who also have a shop, I'd be wary of buying from other vans that I didn't know.I have often wondered about those meat vans at markets with somebody giving out a load of spiel to get people to buy: never had the courage to try any of it. Yeah some vans are ok so long as they come from a good company.0
