Playing a film through my laptop?

How would i play a film via my laptop to my telly? I have a Sony DVD player which allows connection to my laptop but what connections would i need and how easy is it?

Thanks

  • Depends on what outputs your laptop has.

Easiest answer is if your laptop has a S-Video output on it, in which case a S-Video to Scart lead and a 3.5mm jack to 2xPhono for audio is what you need (about £17 in Maplin for 1m kit).

If you've only got the external monitor output the question becomes a lot more difficult and you may need a dedicated converter box to change the signal to something your TV will accept.
  • Apparently my DVD player a Sony DAV DZ260 will accept an input from a laptop.

You normally connect a laptop direct to a TV using a VGA connection (assuming its a reasonably modern TV (Plasma/LCD) it should have a connection at the back). This is what the cable looks like here, but these are male/male, and you may need a male/female. However, this will only give you video and you need to connect the sound via a 3.5 jack from your laptop, to a suitable input on yout TV. You may have a 3.5 jack, or it may be phono inputs in which case you will this type of lead. Depending upon your DVD you might be able to route the sound through that (this is what I do, so I play the video on the TV and the sound through the DVD speakers), although I´m not sure how you´re connecting the video (and why).
  • I thought my DVD player could play divx files but it seems not so i thought it'd be easier than converting a divx file to a format supported on my DVD player. I assume i'd have to convert it to a normal DVD? Is this possible?

Loads of software available to do that. Try here. There is both free and paid for stuff, but if you´.re going to convert it to a video file you might as well burn it to a DVD and play it direct from your DVD. However, if you use the connection method I describe above you should just be able to play the DivX file on your laptop, and then route it through your TV

    Yes, it will.
  • I can't seem to get it to work? It creates a file in a folder on my documents but when i then burn to disc it won't play?

You need to choose the option to Burn Project to Disc, not Create ISO image.

    Guide
  • Done that, lets see if that works.

    Thanks
