why do online stores let you make an order then email to tell you that they have no stock of the item you just ordered. trekwear did it to me last week after ordering a dare2be jacket, 2 days later emailed me to say they are awaiting stock and the item will be dispatched on friday when it arrives from the warehouse, but still not dispatched as yet  GRRRR!!!. looks like im going to go cold during the cold snap this weekend. sorry rant over.

Freemans is just as bad - they let you place an order, say that delivery will be 1-2 weeks, 6 weeks later you get a letter saying that they have no stock and won't be getting any more stock!
If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!
  • come to think of it additions are just as bad. the thing is that they took my payment straight away.

I once got a letter advising a set of drawers I ordered would arrive late. The letter arrived 2 days after the drawers did!

    Probably one of several reasons!

    1. There website does not keep track of stock
    2. The website keeps track of stock but the figures are inaccurate due to errors/pilferage/delay in updating etc.
    3. They just accept any orders if they think delivery is imminent
    4. The warehouse caught fire
    5. They just accept all orders, full stop!
    6. They just don't give a sh**

They want your money so badly that they know that if they tell the truth you'll look elsewhere, so they lock you in with them.

My number one rule with online ordering, from any firm, good or bad, is:

If you need it by a certain date, and you are not interested in an 'alternative' product, go get it from the shop.

Online shopping can be great, and is often quick and easy, but there are so many variables, so many things that can go wrong, and so few guarantees even good firms can make, that you have to allow for considerable delays.

I know this doesn't help you, OP, and I'm sorry you were left without the goods you expected, but hopefully it will help to make your experience a cautionary tale for others who read the thread.

Can totally sympathise with the OP. Got exactly the same problem myself with Tesco.com at the moment! If they had told me there was no stock when I placed my order, I would've gone elsewhere! Now they've got me hanging on, hoping against hope that my goods will be dispatched on the 3rd Dec(estimated). I placed my order on 14th Nov!!!
  • Same here about Tesco - ordered a game on 27 October that was "in stock." I then got an order delayed email and an estimated despatch date of 20 November. Now they tell me that they aren't expecting anymore stock until 27 November. The game is in their stores for £34 but the online price was only £18 so I'm beginning to think they made a mistake and are delaying until I cancel.

I just ordered an item from WH Smith this morning stating 5 day delivery - now I've got an email to say none in stock but they will keep trying with the manufacturer! Grrrrrr

At this rate my kids will have nothing at Christmas but at least I haven't left it until the last minute and can try the shops although I was hoping to avoid that.

I too thought I was being clever by ordering online, using my vouchers to get a DS for £59 & avoiding the usual last minute high street rush...so much for THAT!!!
