  • "chances of her going back to work now are slim as she has severe osteoarthritis of her hip and needs a complete hip replacement.."

    Don't forget that the purpose of a hip replacement is to solve the problem. If the operation is successful, as they usually are, there should be no reason why your mother can't go back to work eventually. Don't push her into expecting to live the rest of her life on benefits unless she really has to.

    hi yes applied for dla for her but she cant get it dunno why she didnt appeal though so may be worth trying again? she's living on pennies per week after she pays her bills etc thought the government gave people around 60 per week to live on not what they have said she can live on.

    I would definitely appeal this or reapply. My MIL is in almost the exact same position and she has just been awarded higher rate DLA for both care and mobility.

    Go to CAB and get them to help complete the forms.

    Dont worry what she is going to live on for life, worry about what she is going to live on for now and from personal experience she should be entitled to DLA so fight for that now.

    Once that worry is out of the way then you can concentrate on her fear.

    I hope all goes well :)

    HB calculation

    Income £119
    Allowance £60.50

    Difference = £58.50
    Taper on difference at 65% leaves £38.03

    Rent £65 - Tapered amount £38.03 = £26.97 weekly housing benefit. By my reckoning.
    Assuming no-one else lives at your mums and she's no savings over £6k or any other income?

    By my reckoning, £26.97 Housing Benefit. Not sure of the taper amount for Council tax benefit, and you'd need to post the full council tax figure for 12 months to work it out.

    Have a look at the letter you've had and check the figures they've quoted, maybe post them on here and people can try to work out what's going on.
