New Jersey and New York....can anyone advise?

Sailing from New Jersey, Cape Liberty next week, and staying in a hotel from our arrival at 3pm in NJ until pick up by RC next morning at 11am. My geography is terrible....can anyone tell me how long it would take to get a cab or subway to NY from NJ for some sightseeing?

Is that Cape Liberty Cruise Port?
If so google maps reckons it's 30 mins by car, almost 1 hour by public transport - that's to Port Authority Bus/Train Station in central Manhatten.

p.s. New Jersey transit (public transport) can be iffy at times though!! So if you need to get back for a specific time then maybe taxi may be best.
I worked in NJ this summer and buses would often not turn up!
