You know that particular kind of bored/ fed-up/ tired thing that afflicts hard working Mummies from time to time? It has struck. I obviously need a nice treat or two, or three...

Sadly money for nice treats is pretty thin on the ground, if it wasn't I wouldn't have to work so hard (and thus wouldn't need one), sods law eh! :(

This is definitely the board for ingenuity, so... What cheap or free pick-me-up's can you suggest? (Except chocolate, bored of chocolate too... it's a clearly a very serious case :p)

Warm bath with a book and cup of tea always helps me (not sure if thats the kind of thing you ment)

  • A glass of wine and an early night, especially of there's someone nice to share it with. Plus, something planned for the weekend. Doesn't matter what it is as long as there's a plan and it's out of the house.
  • I always love a rummage round the charity shops. If I spot a find then there's no feeling like it :)

A hot bath, like others have said. If it's cold, a hot chocolate and whisky, in the bath, is pure pleasure!

A cup of tea and a biscuit solves a lot of things

    Read a book

Make some cakes / shortbread - anything quick and easy, while listening to the radio. There's something really uplifting about baking.

Do you knit or sew or anything like that?

My favourite thing is to curl up in an armchair with a rug, hottie and a cuppa, put a good radio play on iplayer (I'm listening to the repeat of the serialisation of 'To Serve Them All My Days' on Radio Drama this week) and knit.

Do you feel like you need to get out of the house? No matter how much I don't feel like going for a walk before I head out, I always enjoy a stroll in the park, and feel good when I get back.

Another free pick-me-up is a natter with a friend, ideally in person (leave the kids behind if you can) but on the phone is good too.

The main thing I think is to just do something different, whether that's baking a treat for the family that you wouldn't normally do, going on a 'date' with your OH, or spending time by yourself - relaxing with a book or doing a hobby of some sort. As you say, if chocolate has lost its effectiveness then it must be a bad case!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I am a magazine addict but ration myself to two a month, both of which I have a subscription to with Tesco vouchers. It's a real treat when one drops through the door. However atm Tesco are selling one of thse 3 mags for £6 packs...House Beautiful, Prima and Good Housekeeping. I got one of these and it's sitting unopened under the bed as a treat to myself this month.

I like a rummage round the charity shops too, must admit. But sometimes that can cost a lot more than a magazine!
