1800hotels.com

Has anyone used 1800hotels.com to book hotels? Work takes me to London each week and I've been booking hotels via hotelscomparison.com (a bucketshop of bucketshops). 1800hotels.com has cheaper prices for the same hotels but as I've never heard of them before today (found them via a google search) I'm a bit nervous about entering my card details. I found a remark in a forum about them charging 3% for purchases made with credit cards (sounds outrageous!) but otherwise can't find anything about them. Will be grateful to hear of anyone's experience of using them.

  • Hi,
Quite recently we used hotels.com (thru quidco) to book an hotel in New York,
Within 24 hours it had come down in price by £103. I rang them and they refunded me the money, all with emails to confirm. Last week the same accommodation reduced again by some £30 and I rang them again. Once again they refunded the difference only the email confirmation that arrived mentioned www.condosavers.com. I couldn't fathom it out. The hotel.com page said there was no bookings so I panicked big style (worry could be my middle name) I rang hotels.com on Wednesday and a very nice lady in India said the booking was there and I could check with the web site very similar to the one you mention. It was there and she has sent another email with hotels.com to confirm the booking. I think they are all the same company and some are offering rooms cheaper than others. Hope this helps. Sally
  • I'm sure hotels.com is different to 1800hotels.com - there are so many with similar names! Good to know of your experence - I thought that once you'd booked the price was fixed.
  • Hi,
If you look at the T&C's on the hotels.com (or co.uk) site it will explain the cancellation policy which clearly states 'we understand sometimes your plans go wrong and you need to cancel) in which case we will give you a full refund. In my case the first booking was cancelled and the money returned to my bank within 48 hours although they said it could take up to a week and a new booking was created for the lesser price. When it reduced again, they just refunded the smaller amount of money into the bank. All the transactions were called hotels.com on the bank statement. I have now found the web site which was www.180096.com which shows up as www.hoteldiscount.com but the confirmation page is from hotels.com. I know not its far from straigtforward but I do think its OK. One thing I might suggest it to get comparisons for the same hotels as boy do they vary! Sally
  • Booked with 1800hotels.com this morning. A small panic - the process crashed before my booking was confirmed - but when I phoned them later all was OK and the confirmation emailed to me. I was a little suspicious as the price for the hotel (Holiday Inn, Bloomsbury London) is cheap at £61 per night when the Holiday Inn website is quoting £105 and other bucket shop providers quoting £100-ish. I realised that I'd originally found them via travelsupermarket.com so that made me think they must beOK.... The 1800hotels.com website is interesting as the prices fluctuate from hour to hour - I guess prices are being converted from dollars to pounds but I'm surprised that even on a Sunday the prices change every couple of hours! They certainly have some good deals though. :j

I've just booked a hotel with this lot. They seem very competent on the phone - answer extremely quickly - and have a cancellation policy that's better than many of the hotel resellers. Very good prices and fewer horrible stories about them on the internet than many other of the big companies - now I just need to hope that all goes smoothly when I get there!

It does look like their prices are pegged to the dollar: I looked before when the pound is weaker, and since then the price of a nice hotel has dropped from reasonable to bargain :D
