Depends on what you want to see and do in Amsterdam. Generally somewhere within the central canal ring is good for a couple of days break. Amsterdam is very much a "lived in" city with different neighbourhoods all with their own feel (unlike say, London where the centre is for shopping, business, entertainment etc but not really residential). Some people would say Dam Square is the most central location as it's convenient for shops, bars & restaurants, the red light district is near and there would be minimal walking for public transport for the less mobile.

We went last year in Feb, with no hotel booking. Straight off the flight onto the walkway, followed signs for trains to Amsterdam, at the station - came out, followed signs to town centre, five min walk, and found a brilliant hotel (can't remember how much) on one of the streets leading to Dam Square. I know it was fairly cheap and the breakfast was lovely. We managed to do the whole weekend without one cab or bus -walked to Anne Franks house, the (Nacht) Museum, Tussauds, and got some great shopping. Japanese restaurants are wonderful.....

This is the major 'entertainment' area for rowdy Amsterdammers and out-of-towners. Bars chock-a-block with people singing along to Dutch folk songs at the top of their voices, and a few large disco's with heavy security at the door. Because all bars and disco's close at the same moment, sometimes things get out of hand a bit. Strangely enough the square is surrounded by major gay spots and just off the square is the Halvemaansteeg, a small street packed with gay bars. No problems here, so maybe Amsterdam really is a tolerant city. Also nearby is Reguliersdwarsstraat, currently the hippest nightlife street of Amsterdam.
  • We have stayed in the Roode De Loeuw http://www.hotelamsterdam.nl/ twice (spelling?) and the Luxer http://hotelluxer.tobook.com/(four times) the former was nice, the latter used to be nice but last time was horrid. We are now booked into the Brouwer which has great tripadvisor reviews http://www.hotelbrouwer.nl/amseng.html

    All are really central
Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!
