Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework - Question

Hello, I installed MS Messenger a few months ago, but removed it shortly afterwards. Since then I have had the XP update in my automatic update folder which fails to install because I assume it cannot find the messenger file or .NET programm to modify. Questions are - Is this update related to messenger and secondly as I don't use this programme any more is it possible to cancel the update from my list so it doesn't show me 'updates required' icon every time I log on?

Their seems to be a generally growing requrement for .NET and its later variants in software applications. A PC that uses this 'framework' needs to have the latest version as bugs and vulnerabilities are continually patched.

Ah right, I guess I should try and download the .NET program again then. Whats the best way of doing this - go to the windows site and search for it there?

It is clear from reading the blurb that the .NET infrastructure is a 'paradigm rich environment'. This updating problem may have to be circumvented,as you guessed, by doing it yourself.

Microsoft are up to .NET 3.5. I have no idea which programs need what version of .NET. Is there a means of finding out which programs are dependent on various versions of .NET microsoft software ?
