Thank you for all of your views so far - I am going to wait until 4:30pm tomorrow and if I haven't heard anyhting I will phone M&S. To make me feel better the Royal Mail left a parcel on my doorstep from Amazon this morning - at least that wasn't stolen!

My xmas day order from M & S came via Royal Mail and as I wasnt in a card was put through my door to collect it at a more convenient time. My local postman hasn't left anything on my doorstep since I kicked up hell about him leaving an Amazon box in full view of the street til 6pm when I got in from work.

It's not really M&S's fault anyway. It's the fault of the delivery company, who probably took on freelance donkeys from an agency for the busy period.
It is M&S's fault and more importantly, their responsibility. OP's contract is with M&S who have chosen a courier to deliver the goods on their behalf. It is M&S's responsibility to ensure that, where they subcontract part of their service, a reliable and trustworthy subcontractor is chosen.
