BARCLAYCARD PAYMENT NEED HELP PLEASE

Options
I have had a direct debit set up to pay my barclaycard off every month in full. I never use it as a like to pay it off during the month with telephone banking.

It has never taken a payment by direct debit before then this month i paid my balance off in full in fact i over paid it. i had it paid off 4 days before the payment was due yet on the due date for payment a direct debit payment was taken out off my account which was for about 60% of the value of the full balance.

R Barclaycard allowed to do this as the bill had already been paid?

I read on the direct debit website that under the
" The Direct Debit Guarantee"
it states
"If an error is made by the organisation or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid"

This has left me overdrawn at the bank so i would love to know if anyone can tell me were i stand?i.e. getting money back? r they allowed to take payment when balance has been paid in full etc?

MANY THANKS

  • You're entitled to your own cash back, particularly as you've overpaid, and also as it sounds like a potential mistake.

I suggest phoning Barclaycard, explain the situation to them (including the overdraft costs) and see what they say. If they're not willing to refund overdraft costs, talk to your bank because it's the bank that honours the direct debit guarantee.

Direct debits can't be adjusted if [in general] your payment is recieved less than 4 working days in advance of the due date. Thus the automatic collection occurs.

What you can do [if you don't already] is make your manual payments by Debit card - as these credit to the account the next day and Barclaycard can then allow for this at the collection date.

However, I asked them myself if an earlier payment has any effect on a direct debit set up for minimum payments and they told me 'none'. I am curious about this and may check this with them again...

Sounds odd. I checked with a different credit card company and they told me if I made a payment myself the minimum DD would not collect. I thought they would all work the same way. Let us know what they say if you do ask again.
  • Thanks for the reply. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE AS I pay it off before the due date and it is received by them. THE DIRECT DEBIT HAS NEVER TAKEN OUT. AS I SAID I PAY THE FULL BALANCE OFF EVERY MONTH IN FULL BY TELEPHONE BANKING. WHY THEN WOUND THE ONLY TAKE 60% OFF THE PAYMENT OUT BY DD IF THEY WERE DUE TO TAKE OUT THE WHOLE PAYMENT WHICH HAD ALREADY BEEN PAID BY ME 4 DAYS EARLIER?

I AM WORRIED IF GOING OVERDRAWN AT THE BANK WILL EFFECT MY CREDIT RATING. I DO NOT HAVE A DEBIT CARD SO CANNOT PAYOFF THE DAY BEFORE.

I'M JUST CONFUSED ALL I WANT IS THE MONEY BACK IN MY ACCOUNT. I JUST THINK THAT THEY ARE GOING TO TRY AND WRANGLE THEIR WAY OUT OF PAYING ME BACK WHICH I THINK IS DISHONEST AND BOUND TO BE ILLEGAL!!

They are definitely NOT consistent on this, reaper, and are rarely clear about it in their Ts & Cs or on statements which is a pain. They often won't let you change from full payment to minimum payment (or whatever) after the statement has been issued, as they appear to create the DD run at the time the statements are issued, which is also a pain.
  • You may think that I am mad and you might be right but on the one hand I pay the minimum by DD and on the other hand I also pay the minimum by cheque much earlier than the due date for the DD. The fact that I have paid it off by cheque two or three weeks earlier has never made any difference to how much they take by DD. With plenty of 0% credit floating around it makes little or no odds to me.

You can initiate a recall of the direct debit with your bank. Just call your bank and tell them that this direct debit was taken in error, the payment it was to cover was made seperately a number of days previously and so you want a full and immediate refund. You have the right to insist on this under the terms of the direct debit guarantee scheme.

Your bank should be happy to help, but if they try to fob you off for any reason, be firm and absolutely insist. Speak to a manager if necessary.

Barclaycard cannot grumble at you either because you have made your payment and covered your obligations to the credit card account.

Your bank should also be understanding of the fact that this erroneous debit was the reason for you going unexpectedly going overdrawn, and they should really wave any charges they have applied to your account for that reason.

If they don't, name and shame them here on the board, we like to know who gives good service and who treats customers like dirt.

It won't affect your credit rating, the banks do not give the credit reference agencies monthly updates on the running of your current account.

Your barclaycard account will now be in credit by the amount they took via DD. This is fine, it is your money and they will give it back to you.

Your only worry is the overdraft charge at the bank. Speak to the bank manager and see if they will waive the charges, and if not, speak to Barclaycard to see of they will refund you what you are charged as it is their mistake.

Get on the phone to Barclaycard right now (why didn't you ring them straight away anyway?) and you will feel better in a few minutes when it is all sorted.

Also, why not ask the bank to give you a small overdraft facility so if this happens again you won't be charged. You don't have to use the overdraft if you don't want, it will just be there as a safety net.
    I'm married now! Yippee!

Sorry NH - They certainly DO - an overdraft is treated the same way as a credit card or loan in credit reference agency terms, and monthly updates are received and reported on in exactly the same way.

  • I would just like to thank everyone for there help it was much appreciated. I am a student but did not take the overdraft facility on the account.

It turns out the bank did not charge me anyway for going overdrawn. i asked in the bank does going overdrawn affect my credit rating and they said No. while i was there i also applied for an overdraft in case of emergencies like this happening again.

Good news on the barclaycard front they have agreed to credit my bank account with the balance but this will take 3 working days i will keep you all posted.

I am still curious how they came up with the direct debit figure to take out (see my earlier post)

    Many thanks to everyone
