Student House Problem

Some university rental schems impose higher than normal standards of safety etc on 'their' landlords, and although this isn't ncessarily the sort of thing they are focused on (more Carbon monoxide and fire alarms etc etc) it would certainly mean they might look less favourably on recommending the landlord to students and they might have a scheme or a rep to help you negotiate repairs.

No, it was advertised on another student-based accommodation site that showed houses that were let privately.
I am considering contacting the uni's legal team to ask where i stand though as if they say he's !!!!ing us about, they might be able to help arrange for somewhere else to move to, rather than me kicking up a fuss straight away with the LL and being left with no alternatives than to play it his way .0 -
So you are having a new bath installed? The LL responded by sending around his favoured plumber (about a week after) who, upon arriving said that he'd been told to coat any leaks with whatever was cheapest, think he said silicone of some sort. Then he saw it and told me that a new bath would be needed and told the LL's agent, then covered the problems with silicone as a temporary measure.
Had a bath later the same day and it was still leaking so told the LL again, responce was "OK thanks for informing me" then nothing up until about a week ago saying he was having a bath delivered/fitted sometime in the week just gone....nothing since.
You didn't mention this in the OP.
Have you contacted the LL to find out why it wasn't installed last week as promised? Get a new installation date agreed and find out who will be fitting it - probably the LL's favourite plumber again
If so, give him a call and ensure he too agrees to fit it on the agreed date too.
A plumber not turning up to an agreed appointment? Who'd have believed it?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

It taking a month between reporting an it being fixed had me in a rage. Oopsie.A plumber not turning up to an agreed appointment? Who'd have believed it?
Don't think it helps that this plumber hasn't yet been paid, and is owed what my housemate estimates around £300 either.0 -
Okies, time for an update to this thread.
Nothing has been fixed, neither has the landlord contacted any of us since.
I'm feeling pretty annoyed with this house now and feel like sending him a very long angry email but i know that would just end with him saying that i can pack my bags.
Things could be (and probably are ) worse, theres a letter arrived for him from Northern Rock....noth that i'd open it but with my current luck it'll be something along the lines of "Due to your failing to pay the mortgage, the house will be repossessed"
What do i do fellow MSEians?

I think you should open it "by mistake". It's not illegal to do that.
If he's got permission to let the house out, the bank shouldn't be sending him letters to that address anyway. Perhaps he hasn't told them (very naughty).0 -
Did you ring the council private rented section?0

Another update, I sent him an email this morning (he arrived back in the country yesterday from his holidays ) telling him that i wasn't going to take anymore of his stalling and that i wanted both the back door, and bath/shower problems fixed in the space of 1 calender week (reasonable i think considering the back door has been known about for over 3 months, the shower almost 2) otherwise i'd cancel the standing order and seek legal advice.
He responded pretty quickly
he claims that his being out of the country was why its taking so long and that he was going to wait until the christmas break to fix the back door so that we're not disrupted too much because it needs replacing. Fair enough he doesn't want to disrupt us but if the house isn't secure then both his, and my insurance policies are worthless.
Would i be being unreasonable to tell him i want it sorting ASAP because of this? Also would it be unreasonable to tell him i'll be sticking to the cancelling of the standing order if both problems are not fixed before i go home for christmas?0
