I'm thinking of taking the family to Rome in the new year, and wondering if anyone had stayed in any of the hostels there, and could maybe recommend one? Thanks in advance.:D

I have stayed at the International Youth Hostel (IYHA). Easy to get to via Octaviano metro station from the Central Termini then a short bus ride. The bus stops right outside and you cannot miss the building as it is grey, unattractive and large. The dormatories are large, probably 20+ beds - I am pretty sure they have any singles, doubles or family rooms. Each bed has a large locker (remember to take a padlock) The dormatories are also single sex.Large bathrooms with plenty of showers and toilets. Breakfast is included in the price and there is a cafeteria for evening meals which are always very reasonably priced - not sure if there was a self-catering kitchen. It was very cheap to stay there but there are no frills. Octaviano metro is just round the corner from St.Peters and all the sites were easy to get to. I have also stayed in Convent Guest Houses all of which seem to have increased their prices over the past couple of years and are on parr with some of the budget hotels situated around Termini Station. If you do a Forum Search re Rome you will find lots of good information, advice and hotel recommendations on this site.At the end of the day it was cheap, clean and safe.SallyD0

I've not stayed at a hostel there before, but when I went in June we stayed here which I think must have been pretty cheap (not sure how much as it was part of a Contiki tour but I wouldn't have thought it was much):

It's near Termini station but still an easy 10 minute walk to the centre of Rome, and was clean.
The rooms are huge too so you could probably get a good family room for a decent price.Best 2013 win - £2k trip to China!

Thanks for the replies so far, I don't really have a budget as such, but don't want to spend anymore than I have to!!

I was thinking around £250 -£300 for about 4 nights stay, not sure if that is realistic or wishful thinking!
Any advice is greatly received.0 -
You should be able to stay in Rome well under your budget.
Check out https://www.hostelworld.com. They have the Foro Italiano international youth hostel I mentioned in an earlier post (have to be a Youth Hostel member to get discounted rate - you can join in UK or there. Worth checking to see if YHA have a special half price membership for new members or if you have Tesco points you can use them for membership and accommodation!)
The Des Artistes has been recommended to me also Christina hostel.
You could email C.P.A. Coperativa Il Sogno - Marina [cpasogno@romeguide.it] this is an agency that books convent accommodation they will tell you what is available and how much.
I first stayed in the International Youth Hostel in Venice because the hotel rooms were so expensive and we were only going for 3 nights on the basis if we did not like it we would not do it again....I was a game old bird of 50. Well, it got me going off travelling and over the past 7 years I have stayed in some fantastic places. With cheap flights and hostel prices on a shoe string.. My only regret is that I did not know about such facilities when my son was growing up. PM if you want general info about facilities etc.,
Go - ENJOY!SallyD0 -
Thanks Sally for all your help, I forgot to say that we are a family of 4, (2 kids nearly 13 and 17) , I can see I'm going to have to spend a while looking into this, that at least I now know where to start! Thanks again
