Do you want to play any PS3 games?
If yes, buy PS3
If not, buy Blueray player.
The latter will be cheaper.0 -
The PS3 has the latest version of Blue Ray software/firmware and it is rumoured that this is upgradable should the standard change.0

PS3 everytime as the firmware will be updated by sony far more often than any blu ray player
and as blu ray is starting to pick up (WALL-E is cheaper on blu ray than on DVD on pkay.com) it will be important to keep the firmware upto dateIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
DO NOT BUY ANY BLU-RAY PLAYER THAT CANNOT BE UPDATED.
Playstation 3 is a bargain TBH because not only can it play Blu-Ray but you can stream media from your computer and store music CDs on it as well.0 -

PS3 everytime!
If no internet the manufacturers should provide an update on blu-ray discs so it would update when you put disc into machine/console (i hope) don't quote me but i suspect that it would work very much like a patch for your player/PS3.
PS3 has upscaling on normal DVD's & a blu-ray player made by BUSH just wouldn't last that long to be honest (you get what you pay for)0 -

Even sooner than that. The first generation blu-Ray players had problems playing discs when Blu Ray Profile 1.1 was released and films were released in that format. Profile 1.0 players cannot access the bonus features on 1.1. When Profile 2.0 is released, if you can't upgrade your player (those without internet connectivity won't be able to use profile 2) then you're going to miss out on even more bonus features.
A good explanation:

wouldnt there be grounds for a refund if you bought a blu ray player and found it couldnt play newly bought blu ray discs?0
-
Profile 2.0 has been available on PS3 for a while and is starting to appear on newer stand-alone players. Its best to get it confirmed that the machine you want has profile 2.0 before buying it.
The Blu-ray films will work in any version of Blu-ray player - just that not all will give you the extra features.0
