Slow Mcafee VirusScan Using Win 98 / ME Fix ..
If anyone else here has experienced their Win 98 / ME PC grinding to a halt after upgrading to the latest superdat's (judging by my futile attempts at finding a fix on Google or the Mcafee boards, I am not alone), this workaround may resolve it ..
Turn off System Scan on Outbound files
The symptoms with Outbound scanning enabled, are a 10 minute startup time, and 30 seconds load time for IE (and everthing else !)..
This applies to Virusscan v4.5.1 with the 4.4.00 engine, and possibly other Mcafee products on Windows 9x/Me.
Or, you could upgrade the O/S, and/or change your Virus Scan Vendor..
---
On further investigation, this is a bad workaround.. Despite the name, outbound files are any file that is read by the PC, so this method should only be used on a PC with files that have been fully manually scanned with an upto date scanner. The inbound protection may still help to protect against any new files saved to your PC though.
Time to get a new virus scanner...

Well it appears to work fine on NT/XP etc, but kills 98/ME PC's performance.
It's not the first time a dat update has done this either, but previously they have produced a new Vxd Hotfix or superdat to cure it.
People with old O/S's seem to have been left high and dry by Mcafee, and their are no official responses on their own Boards, about how to resolve it - they are just telling their customers to do a spyware scan, and clean up their browser cache, which changes nothing..
Have been on the verge of changing to a different vendor for months, but thought I'd have a last click around the settings before doing that.
It's now back to normal.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Haven't used McAffee for a while never really liked it - Gone off norton too as it is also quite resource heavy. I'm currently using the Microsoft Livecare one on this machine - seems to be working quite well so far - although its only a beta
on the laptop i'm using EZ Trust AV cause its free :-D0
