Does it have to be strong flour/ BM flour in the BM????

Options
I have spent hours searching but with so many threads on it can not get my question answered.

I really need to get my shopping bill down and wondered about using value flour in the BM as the strong is so much more....anyone else tried this???

Opinion does seem divided over the best flour to use and I think that's because making bread in a BM depends on so many factors ie type of machine, temperature of the kitchen, what the weather's like, how precise you are with your measurements etc etc

Personally, I cannot use anything but BM flour in my MR fastbake but I know others on here have great success using value flour.

Best thing to do is to try it with the ordinary flour and see how that turns out in your BM - you'll soon find out if you can use it or not :p

Value plain flour works just fine in my BM and I know many other Ol'Stylers have tried it with good results too. Delia in on of her 1970's books says ordinary plain flour HM bread is better than shop bought. HTH

  • Yes, it definitely must be strong flour or labelled as bread flour. This contains a higher proportion of gluten in the flour which is essential for the bread to work.

Whatever you do DONT try to substitute just plain ordinary flour it will not work and you will waste your money.

As you use your bread machine more you may also find you notice the difference between the different brands. Adjust as you go along or stick to the brand that always works for you.

If you've just had a new bread machine for christmas take care and make sure that you measure everything very carefully, especially the water. Use the measure provided and not a pyrex jug. My husband did this last week whilst I was out and wondered why the bread hadn't worked out very well. Good Luck

i always use value flour and i'm very happy with the results. i used to use strong flour( when had more money ) but i am much happier with the result from value flour. and a loaf of home made bread never lasts very long anyway.
best thing i can suggest is , TRY IT. i u dont like it then buy strong flour. If you do then Wow what a fantastic saving your be making.

I always use "just plain ordinary flour" -it works perfectly well! :)

its only a few pence a bag so why not give it a try? you can always use the rest of the bag for other cooking if you dont get on with it for bread...

(ps I can make a white loaf for <15p,local shop charges 90p)

I have had good results with a machine using spelt flour. I think that the type of yeast used makes a lot of difference. Have you ever tried scrounging a lump of fresh yeast from bakeries at Tesco? The bread tastes just like theirs (if you want that!). I find the Hovis packet yeast very good - probably full of additives...

I always used to use value flour & it worked perfectly in my breadmaker. I have only switched beacuse I am now using more organic ingredients where ever possible, I just use ordinary organic flour though, never even looked for organic bread making flour!!
