...or did you mean computer base unit? Would that have to include a monitor, could you build your own pc?

When building your own, under £50, AMD provide the best out of box performance, above that Intel is usually the way to go. Very simple way of putting it though, depending on what you want to do, eg -overclocking is one of intels strengths, the e7X00 series can be whacked up to ridiculous levels.

Goodness, who can afford £400 for a cpu!? Well, except those that can.

A quick look on Ebuyer and I see this ready-made system, free 19" monitor, looks quite nice.

The core2Quad Q9650 that tonyhague mentions is good but expensive compared to a Q9550 - £411 vs £257 at Ebuyer. I have a Q9550 that overclocks easily to 3.4 GHz, which is plenty fast enough for me.

For performance and relibility I would recommend any of the current Pentium-Class processor family, keep away from Celeron type chips. ;)
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
  • mobeer...he said £400, I was kinda taking the mickey a little bit 'cos i'm fairly sure he didn't really mean CPU.
3.4 is pretty good, walks all over my q9300 @3, still not worked out which component is letting me down (possibly NB or ram), but i'll get to 3.2 eventually (on air).
