I've always thought that too
anyone could take any suitcase they wanted without anyone batting an eyelid. 0 -
Fairly high risk for a probable low reward. The place is covered with CCTV and security, you still have to go through Customs with the stolen bag, and what are you most likely to get, a load of dirty clothing worth nothing (against which you have to offset the cost of your flight since you can't get to baggage reclaim without coming off a plane).
So you could probably get away with it a few times, but after a while...0 -
Just go to France... at Toulouse for example, anyone can walk in off the street & help themselves, although sometimes there's a security guard who may, or may not, stop them. That, in particular, always seems very iffy.0

What Altarf said.
They take a cctv picture of you as you pass through security at your departure airport, it's linked with your boarding card, and hence your name, credit card details and passport.
The baggage collection place is covered comprehensively in cctv and any attempt to hide your face from them would have a security guard onto you in seconds.
They know who you are and where you live. Big brother is watching.0 -
Nothing at all. It would be very easy. However most seasoned travellers wouldn't put anything of great value in their checked-in cases.
I don't even lock my case, ever since some years ago it was broken in to by the US security checks.0 -

thats laughable....so cctv are cross referancing every bag against a pic of who checked in ? what if i pick my wifes bag up ? hundreds of bags all look the same /similar
the only way i can see it kicking off is if you steal a bag and the owner is standing there and see's you do and gets security on you fast , if you got pulled up you would just say oops my mistake we've got a bag just like it , im tired from the flight0 -
There are some airports, mostly if not entirely overseas, where they do check your tags against your ticket as you leave. It's happened on every flight I've been on in South America for example.
Places where a suitcase of dirty clothing might be worth stealing0 -

I didnt use to lock mine on the way out on hols until someone knicked my husbands brand new england trainers with price tag still on out of the top of my suitcase at east midlands airport. My husband swore blind i'd forgotten to pack them and they'd be on the bedroom floor at home waiting for us when we got back needless to say they werent lol.
Think it would be quite difficult to take someones case without them spotting you really and also what if they had illegal items in it and you got stopped at customs and sent down for the next ten years how would you explain "its not mine".0
