Changing my Surname

I have been married for the second time for 10 months now and decided it's about time I got around to changing my surname.

What's the best way to go about informing all the relevent people. Inland Revenue, Credit Cards, Banks,Utilities, Pensions etc etc

The list just seems vast!!!

  • When i changed my name to married surname I needed to write enclosing a copy of my marriage certificate. DVLA, Passport office, credit card companies & mobile phone company needed to see a certified copy, as did work for pension / shares etc, I think I needed to go into the banks with a certified copy and pretty much everyone else accepted a photocopy. I found it easiest to write a fairly standard letter, then just amend the reference details for each different company. Bizarrely, I think the Inland Revenue were the only people who let me change it over the phone!!

Once you've written the letter it doesn't take too long to get through them all - good luck!

  • Hi - I got married in August and have only just finished getting my name changed on all my documents.

Best thing to do as bathbabe suggested is a standard letter and if you do a google search you can find them on the internet then just amend as needed.

Do the most important ones first like your driving licence and passport as most agencies want your orginial marriage certificate you'll have to wait for that to be posted back each time before you can do the next one. At this time of year passports are quite quick and mine came back just 6 days after I had applied for it!

Make a list and tick them off as you go - my doctors let me do it over the phone as did my dentist.

    Good luck!
